Theoretical Underpinnings

For us at Bowman Music Centre, music is not an ‘add on’, it is a part of life itself.

Bowman Music Centre uses an eclectic approach in fostering the development of students. Certainly while the Centre caters to music development, it also supports the holistic development of the student.

At Bowman Music Centre, learning is planned around the student. A constructivist approach to learning is taken as interactions are planned based on the needs and interests of learners. Each student is different and so the learning experience is tailored to meet learners where they are and take them to where they can ‘become’. This allows students to learn at an appropriate pace while developing their appreciation of music. The prior experiences of learners are also considered and integrated into the learning experience so that students can link their learning to the realities of life. A hands on approach is taken to teaching and learning and so even theoretical knowledge is shared in concrete ways to ensure that students understand and can apply the information learnt.

As play is a valuable tool in fostering learning in children, games form a major part of the experience provided for students. Gamification is used as a tool to allow students to enjoy music and develop the understanding that music is fun! Apps are used to develop student’s skills and competencies while increasing their engagement in the learning experience.

Behaviorists believe in the value of practice and praise which form a key part of the experiences at Bowman Music Centre. Students are provided with opportunities to practice in sessions and supported in practicing outside these sessions. Students are consistently motivated to set and achieve targets as they develop efficacy.

The skills of 21st Century learning are integrated in the learning experience and digital technology is used to engage learners in meaningful ways. The students’ portal is organized to provide students with access to resources so that they can be self-directed in their learning. The portal also provides practice trends to allow students to invest time in the music, measure their efforts and value the results.

Music is a more potent instrument than any other for education because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul.
